Once the most anticipated movie of the Lunar New Year, Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Legend saw a major setback despite the collaboration between Xiao Zhan and renowned director Tsui Hark. Despite being the top pre-sold ticket contender and boasting a huge fanbase, the film quickly fell into disappointment.

The movie started strong with a box office opening of 355 million yuan on the first day, but after four days, it only grossed 377 million yuan, ranking 4th out of the 5 films released during the same period. Fans expressed their frustration by returning and reselling tickets on social media platforms.
The film's failure was largely due to an overemphasis on the love triangle between Guo Jing, Huang Rong, and Hua Zheng, which overshadowed the core themes of chivalry and patriotism central to the story. The martial arts scenes, heavily reliant on special effects, were criticized for leaning more toward fantasy than action. Some plot changes were also hard to accept for fans of Jin Yong's original work, further distancing the film from the source material.

Xiao Zhan’s acting and appearance failed to meet expectations. As an artist with limited acting experience, his performance felt stiff, with expressions that were too monotone to convey complex emotions. Similarly, actress Sabrina Zhuang's portrayal of Huang Rong lacked the charm of her previous roles, and the chemistry between her and Xiao Zhan as Guo Jing was deemed weak, leading to the pair being labeled as "the worst Guo Jing and Huang Rong couple in history."
