On January 24, Sina reported that several images showing interactions between Esther Yu and her male co-star Ding Yuxi from the drama Eternal Night Starry Sky are causing controversy on Weibo due to the sensitive positions in which they are captured.
In one scene, Esther Yu and Ding Yuxi were practicing a dance, and the actress's movements were quite suggestive, creating an awkward situation where Ding Yuxi had to lean back to avoid physical contact. In another scene, while they were still filming, Esther Yu used her pinky finger to rub against Ding Yuxi’s waist.
On Weibo, some viewers commented that Esther Yu likes to show off her cuteness, femininity, and friendliness with male co-stars, sometimes leading to sensitive situations. Some even directly accused her of sexually harassing her co-star.
However, many defended Esther Yu, claiming that the dance move was accidental. Furthermore, several of her fans asserted that Ding Yuxi had frequently slandered Esther Yu and spread false rumors about her.
Earlier, when a fan asked Ding Yuxi if he liked eating fish, he replied, "I’m afraid of fish bones." This remark ignited a large debate on social media, as many suspected he was subtly mocking Esther Yu. In Mandarin, the surname "Yu" sounds similar to the word for fish. As a result, some fans interpreted this as Ding Yuxi expressing dislike or fear of his co-star. Esther Yu's fans immediately flooded Ding Yuxi's personal page to express their displeasure, criticizing him for being ungrateful and insincere. They argued that Ding Yuxi had risen to fame thanks to Esther Yu and, after gaining popularity, was now mocking her.
Fans of Esther Yu claimed that Ding Yuxi was exploiting her fame for his own benefit, only to turn around and insult her once he became successful. However, Ding Yuxi’s fans argued that Esther Yu’s supporters were over-interpreting and being overly sensitive, insisting that the comment about fish bones was genuine.
In 2024, Esther Yu and Ding Yuxi were one of the most beloved on-screen couples in Chinese dramas. They not only looked great together on screen but also often displayed affectionate gestures towards each other behind the scenes.
Due to their sweet interactions, fans were increasingly convinced that the two had developed romantic feelings after working together twice. Ding Yuxi had also made special gestures for Esther Yu on several occasions.
