Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, 49, has passed away in Japan, reportedly due to complications from the flu.

Her younger sister, MC Dee Hsu, confirmed the news to Taiwanese media on February 3, stating, "Thank you for your concern. Our family traveled to Japan during the Lunar New Year, and Barbie was infected with the flu. She left us due to flu-related pneumonia. I am grateful to have been her sister in this life. We took care of her and accompanied her. I will always be thankful and miss her. Wishing her a peaceful journey."

According to Taiwanese media, Barbie Hsu was cremated in Japan. Relatives and friends have remained silent regarding her passing, while her former husband, Wang Xiaofei, changed his social media profile picture to black. Barbie Hsu has also disabled comments on her Instagram account.

Speculation surrounding her death intensified after the Facebook page "Japan Travel, Shopping and Food Information" posted a cryptic message about a major Taiwanese star passing away due to acute flu in Japan. The post hinted at an official announcement, referencing her roles in Meteor Garden and her marriage to a foreigner.

Barbie Hsu had a history of health issues, including fainting spells caused by colds and epilepsy relapses. In 2016, she experienced a severe health crisis while giving birth, suffering from oxygen deprivation, an epileptic seizure, and cardiac arrest. After being in a coma for 10 days, she recovered. In a past interview, she reflected on mortality, saying, "As a human, you never know when you will die. I am no longer afraid of death, absolutely not."

Born in 1976, Barbie Hsu gained widespread fame for her roles in Meteor Garden, God of War, and Summer Bubble. She stepped away from acting in 2012 and maintained a private life. Following her divorce from businessman Wang Xiaofei in 2021, she focused on raising her children. In 2022, she married South Korean DJ Koo.
