Shortly after Everlasting Longing aired, Angelababy’s long-delayed film "Back For You" was finally released. This detective drama, set in the early 20th-century Republic of China, stars Angelababy alongside Wang An Yu and was originally filmed in 2022. However, its broadcast was postponed due to the actress’s controversy in 2023, when she attended BLACKPINK Lisa’s cabaret show in Paris.
In the drama, Angelababy portrays Luna, a comic artist who secretly assists young police officer A Lai (played by Wang An Yu). When A Lai is injured on a mission, Luna rescues him but ends up in a coma. A doctor advises A Lai to read comics to her, and unexpectedly, the stories she created begin to help him solve real-life cases.
Blending detective, psychological, and fantasy elements, Back For You features a fast-paced narrative, suspenseful plot twists, and comedic moments. The drama also includes cameos from well-known actors such as Zhang Yu Jian, Lin Yang, and Cheng Xiao.
Despite the anticipation, many viewers believe Angelababy’s career has taken a downturn. Once a leading actress in major productions, she now stars in a smaller-scale project alongside Wang An Yu, an actor with a lower profile. Her acting continues to spark debate, as critics argue that her beauty cannot compensate for her limited emotional expressions, such as exaggerated eye-rolling and stiff facial movements.
In the first four episodes, Angelababy’s performance went largely uncriticized as her character remained in a coma, requiring minimal acting. However, in later episodes, her screen time remained limited, leading to speculation that it was reduced due to her acting abilities.
As “Back For You” continues to air, audiences remain divided—some appreciate its engaging storyline, while others critique Angelababy’s performance and career trajectory.
