Despite high expectations, "Nezha 2" has faced disappointing results in the North American market, grossing only $3.1 million and falling far behind "Captain America 4," which earned $40 million on its opening day.

The animated sequel debuted in the U.S. and Canada on February 14, premiering in 660 theaters with an average box office revenue of $4,696 per theater. Although praised by some foreign audiences, the film’s performance has not lived up to its domestic success, where it grossed over 10 billion yuan.

In contrast, "Captain America 4" dominated with a release in 4,105 theaters, nearly six times more than "Nezha 2." The Marvel blockbuster also boasted an average box office revenue per theater of $9,744—more than double that of "Nezha 2"—making it clear which film has stronger appeal.

Distribution issues may have played a role in "Nezha 2"’s underperformance. Handled by China Film Group, the film struggled to secure widespread screenings, primarily relying on AMC Cinemas. Limited showtimes and lower audience turnout per screening further dampened its box office prospects.
Despite early media reports suggesting overwhelming demand, ticket sales data paints a different picture. With an estimated 293 tickets sold per theater on average, "Nezha 2" faced lower audience engagement than expected. Meanwhile, "Captain America 4" enjoyed higher attendance, ensuring it will continue to dominate North American theaters while "Nezha 2" sees its screenings reduced.
While "Nezha 2" may have achieved domestic success, its North American reception highlights the challenges of competing in a market dominated by Hollywood blockbusters.
