A month after Squid Game returned for season 2, T.O.P shared insights into crafting the character of Thanos. From the outset, both he and director Hwang Dong Hyuk aimed to make Thanos an unsettling and frustrating presence on screen.
Reflecting on the audience’s strong reactions, T.O.P expressed satisfaction with the role.
“After many discussions with the director, I wanted to create a unique character unlike anything seen before. I used outdated and exaggerated gestures to make viewers uncomfortable. However, I wasn’t sure if they would feel discomfort or secondhand embarrassment. My goal was for them to sense the character’s strangeness,” T.O.P revealed.
One of the most awkward scenes, according to the former BIGBANG member, was when Thanos attempted to flirt with player 196 (Song Ji Woo) by rapping.
“I’ve been a rapper for over 20 years, but I’ve never rapped to impress a woman. Filming that scene was a real challenge,” he admitted.
In Squid Game 2, T.O.P takes on the role of Thanos, a washed-up rapper drowning in debt due to failed cryptocurrency investments. His character is eccentric and mentally unstable, adding to the controversy surrounding his portrayal. Many viewers criticized his performance, with some unwilling to accept his return to the industry after past scandals.
Back in 2017, T.O.P was sentenced to two years of probation for marijuana use. The incident led to his prolonged hiatus from entertainment, and he later stated that he left BIGBANG to avoid causing further harm to his bandmates.
