Sean Baker’s Brooklyn-set comedy ‘Anora’ solidified its status as the Oscar favorite after winning top honors at both the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) and Directors Guild Awards (DGA) on Saturday night.
With Hollywood’s awards season more unpredictable than usual, several films had emerged as potential Best Picture contenders. But ‘Anora’, which stars Mikey Madison as a Brooklyn exotic dancer who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, has surged ahead after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes and now sweeping key industry awards.

The PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award has correctly predicted the Best Picture Oscar winner in 16 of the last 21 years, while the DGA Awards have historically aligned with the Best Director Oscar in 66 out of 74 years. With Baker securing both wins, he is now the frontrunner for Best Director at the Academy Awards.
Meanwhile, RaMell Ross’ ‘Nickel Boys’ won Best First Film at the DGA Awards. The film, which is also an Oscar Best Picture nominee, marks Ross’ narrative feature debut.
In the Best Animated Feature race, DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Wild Robot’ dominated the Annie Awards, winning nine trophies, including Best Film. With this momentum, it is now the clear favorite to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar on March 2.
Oscar voting begins Tuesday, with Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ leading nominations at 13. However, the film’s chances have plummeted amid controversy and backlash, leaving ‘Anora’ in prime position to take home the Academy’s top prize.
