Rapper and fashion designer Kanye West has revealed that he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and is now diagnosed with autism.
West shared that his wife, Bianca Censori, encouraged him to seek a re-evaluation. "She said, 'There's something about my personality that doesn't seem bipolar.' She has seen people with bipolar disorder before. I took her advice, got re-examined, and was diagnosed with autism," West explained.
Reflecting on past behaviors, he linked his diagnosis to moments such as his 2018 support for Donald Trump, including wearing a Make America Great Again hat and making controversial statements. "Autism makes you do things like Rain Man. You wear this Trump hat because you like Trump. And when people tell you not to, you just do it. That’s my problem—I tend to go against expectations, whether it's with my music or my choices," he said.
While autism is not classified as a mental illness, West's ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, previously acknowledged his struggles with mental health. In 2020, she stated, "People who understand mental illness know that the family is helpless unless the member is a minor. Those unfamiliar with it can be judgmental and fail to grasp that the individual must seek help on their own."
West has frequently referenced bipolar disorder in his music, even humorously labeling his 2018 album cover with the phrase, "I hate being Bi-Polar, it’s awesome." However, he now believes the misdiagnosis contributed to challenges in his life, including the collapse of his Adidas partnership.
West also revealed that he has stopped taking medication. "I haven't been on medication since I found out that bipolar wasn't a diagnosis. I'm looking for ways to maintain my creativity, which is clearly what I bring to the world," he said, adding that he remains vigilant about his mental well-being.
