Acknowledging the mixed reviews, Lee Jung Jae explained the reason behind the controversial ending of Squid Game Season 2 and assured fans that the upcoming season will be more engaging.
According to the actor, the final scene of Season 2 sparked strong reactions from viewers. "Seeing what happened, I wonder if airing Season 2 early was a smart choice. But waiting to complete all 13 episodes before releasing them would have taken too long, and the audience's interest might have faded. I'm sure Netflix and the director are struggling to make the right decision," he shared.

Despite the criticism, Lee Jung Jae remains unfazed, considering it a natural part of any project. "Every series receives mixed opinions. The key is to stay level-headed and focus on constructive feedback." He also revealed that Squid Game Season 3 is in post-production, and the team may make adjustments based on audience reactions.
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk, in a recent interview, admitted that he never originally planned Squid Game as a multi-season series. However, after the show's global success, Netflix requested additional seasons, leading to significant changes in the storyline.
"I wrote Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time, and during that process, a turning point caused a major shift in the character’s arc. In other words, the ending of Season 2 came to me quite early, but the conclusion of Season 3 evolved differently from my initial vision," Hwang explained.
Squid Game Season 3 is set to premiere on June 27, 2025.
