Maya Hawke has spoken out about the growing influence of social media on Hollywood casting, revealing that some producers now consider an actor’s follower count when deciding whether a movie gets made.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Stranger Things star shared that while her parents, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, protected her privacy growing up, today’s industry increasingly blurs the line between actor and celebrity. She noted that actors are now expected to share more of their personal lives online, with social media presence becoming a key factor in casting decisions.
Hawke recalled conversations with directors who warned her that deleting her Instagram could affect her chances of being cast, as producers require a certain number of collective followers from a film’s cast to secure funding.
Despite these industry pressures, Hawke considers herself fortunate to have worked with directors like Quentin Tarantino, Bradley Cooper, and Wes Anderson—filmmakers who prioritize creative freedom over social media influence.
